Roast can mean a lot for Boroondara's disadvantaged

Cassie Maher

TUCKING in to a hearty roast dinner is a winter staple for most people but it's a rare luxury for Boroondara's disadvantaged.

More than 2800 people contacted Kew-based community support agency Camcare in the past year for food vouchers, phone cards and train tickets.

More than a third of those sought emergency relief, up by about 100 people from the year before.

Camcare administrative officer Jenny Cropley said most disadvantaged people were males aged 25 to 59 and the majority of females had one or more children.

This month up to 40 needy people across the municipality will receive a hot roast dinner through The Roast Kitchen's annual Christmas in July Charity Tree initiative.

Gaynor Bearsley from The Roast Kitchen in Kew said customers were invited to buy a subsidised tree bauble which represented a hot roast dinner, distributed by Camcare.

"We in Boroondara live in a location that is perceived as affluent and problem free sadly this is not always the case," Ms Bearsley said.

"Winter's no fun when you're hungry."

The Roast Kitchen is at 259 High St, Kew.
